Bibby Reportedly Agrees to a New Deal With Kings

Mike Bibby, the point guard who became a star during the Sacramento Kings’ run to the Western Conference finals, agreed to a new contract with the Kings, the Associated Press learned Thursday.

The length of Bibby’s contract wasn’t available. One source said the Kings will announce the signing today in Las Vegas.

Bibby, 24, averaged 13.7 points and 5.0 assists during the regular season. He then elevated his game remarkably in the playoffs, averaging 20.3 points in the Western Conference finals.

Patrick Ewing and the Orlando Magic are parting ways after one season, with the team buying out the 40-year-old center’s contract.... Free-agent forward Matt Harpring signed a four-year, $18.5-million deal with the Utah Jazz.

Tennis

Greg Rusedski won the first-set tiebreaker, then scored the only service break of the match to upset top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6 (3), 6-4, in the third round of the RCA Championships at Indianapolis.

Hewitt’s ouster left No. 3 Tommy Haas as the highest remaining seeded player. Haas defeated 13th-seeded Michel Kratochvil, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Fifth-seeded Tim Henman withdrew because of a back injury.

Defending champion and second-seeded Andy Roddick was ousted in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic at Washington, losing to Fernando Meligeni 6-4, 6-4. Top-seeded Andre Agassi advanced to the quarterfinals but struggled to beat Brian Vahaly, 6-1, 7-6 (3).... Martina Hingis took another encouraging step on her comeback from an ankle injury with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Clarisa Fernandez at the Rogers AT&T; Cup in Montreal. Earlier in the day, Hingis received a wild-card entry to the U.S. Open.

Hockey

Free-agent winger Theo Fleury signed a two-year, $8.5-million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Fleury averaged 67 points while battling substance abuse and personal problems in three seasons with the New York Rangers.

Forward Jaroslav Bednar agreed to a one-year contract with the Kings.

Kate Golden had an eagle in a five-under-par 67 that gave her a one-shot lead over Mi Hyun Kim of Korea after the first round of the LPGA Canadian Women’s Open at Vaudreuil-Dorian.... Annika Sorenstam, back home in Sweden for the first time in two years, shot a five-under 67 for a share of the first-round lead at the Compaq Open at Helsingborg.... Pepperdine senior Lindsey Wright and USC senior Becky Lucidi advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship by winning two matches apiece at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y. Wright, an Australian, defeated UC Irvine sophomore Walailak Satarak, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinals. Lucidi, from Poway, defeated Emily Bastel of Ohio, 3 and 1, in the quarterfinals.

Michael Phelps and Erik Vendt broke the world record in the men’s 400-meter individual medley.

Phelps finished in 4 minutes 11.09 seconds at the U.S. national swimming championships at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Vendt’s time was 4:11.27 seconds, still well ahead of American Tom Dolan’s former world mark of 4:11.76 in the event.

The Galaxy completed its day-old trade-deadline swap with D.C. United, sending forward Henry Zambrano to Washington hours after selecting him in the Major League Soccer waiver draft. In exchange, the Galaxy gets to keep the conditional pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft it originally gave up to D.C. United in dealing for forward Chris Albright Jan. 11.

Chivas Rayadas of Guadalajara, one of the most popular Mexican club soccer teams in Los Angeles, and El Fas, the champions of El Salvador’s recently completed opening tournament, will meet in an exhibition match at the Coliseum on Aug. 28 at 8 p.m.

Passings

Kyle Rote, one of the most popular players in New York Giant history, has died at 73. He died Wednesday night of cardiopulmonary complications at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
