Griffith Park’s oasis for kids

Share

“Griffith Park: It’s central to L.A.” (Nov. 28) was a comprehensive guide, but didn’t mention one of the most wonderful places in this L.A. oasis: Shane’s Inspiration, a “boundless” playground -- the first of its kind in California -- where disabled children can play side-by-side with their able-bodied peers.

The playground, which opened two years ago near the merry-go-round, is named in honor of a little boy named Shane who died as an infant from spinal muscular atrophy.

Most of the play structures are universally accessible, meaning children don’t have to leave their wheelchairs, braces or other support devices to play.

The best part? During playground planning sessions, local disabled children said that special equipment would be nice, but what they wanted most of all was to play with other kids.

And that’s what you’ll see at this inspiring playground.
