Channing Way’s on a Roll

Owned and bred by Lawrence Becker and trained by Dan Morgan, Channing Way has been a classic overachiever.

A dark bay filly by Smokester out of the Wig Out mare Only Silk, Channing Way has won 11 of 16 in her career.

One of six scheduled for today’s $70,000 Corona Handicap at Hollywood Park, the fifth leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $155,872, Channing Way has won 10 times since the beginning of 2001.

She is the co-third choice at 4-1 on Russ Hudak’s morning line.

The 9-5 favorite is Madame Pietra, owned by Carl Grether and trained by Howard Zucker. Madame Pietra has won four of 13 and will be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela.

Habibti is the 2-1 second choice.

Race of the day: Hollywood Park’s fifth is a $16,000 claimer featuring such hard knockers as Disguys Dalimit, My Friend Lumpy and Olympic Success.

Who’s hot: Steve Asmussen. The country’s second-leading trainer in terms of wins won with seven of his first 17 starters at the Fair Grounds.

Who’s not: Yvette Thompson and Herberto Toledo. The two trainers, who are based at Calder, are a combined four for 74 in 2002.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Seattlespectacular and Wholly John in the sixth, singling Sea Of Showers in the seventh, Madame Pietra and Channing Way in the eighth and Rhetoric Express, Gummies Symph, Ufology and Ima Mile High Guy in the ninth.
