Once Again, BCS Goes Off Without a Hitch

I am delighted to hear now the potential new rules the BCS will use to determine bowl hopefuls and contenders:

1. The standard flipping of coins and drawing of straws.

2. Stabbing pins in a map while blindfolded.

3. Picking papers out of a hat.

4. Throw darts at a map over the shoulder while blindfolded.

5. Hold a child upside down while he or she yells out names of states at random.

Those USC fans should quit whining about how unfair the BCS is. If it wasn’t for the series, the Trojans would be strutting their two-loss record in the lowly Holiday Bowl far from New Year’s Day. Instead, the BCS foisted the Trojans on a BCS bowl that didn’t even want them.

And in the end, the BCS did exactly what it was designed to do: It placed the only undefeated teams in the country in a title game when they would not otherwise have been able to play each other.

It is embarrassing to read the tidal wave of whining that The Times sportswriters have penned in relation to the “unjust” BCS. Pulleeeassseee. This whole Pacific 10-Big Ten Rose Bowl matchup has been overblown for years. In years past, it usually meant two mediocre teams dressed up in pageantry, playing for civic pride.

Truth be told, if the old Rose Bowl alliance was currently in place, then Plaschke and Co. would be crying about the unfairness of Ohio State’s being left out of the national championship game. In the past, the “ingenious” Rose Bowl game deprived us of heavyweight national championship games between Nebraska and Penn State in 1994 and Michigan-Nebraska in 1997.

The BCS was handed a no-brainer this year by having the only two undefeated Division I college football teams face off in the Fiesta Bowl. But even when the BCS gets it right, it still manages to get something wrong.

It won’t be long before some of the pro leagues emulate the brilliant BCS system.

The Phoenix Suns’ final won-lost record will be padded a few games due to their strength of schedule in the Pacific Division. The popular Chicago Cubs will be given special at-large playoff consideration because they travel well. A minimum 9-7 record will be the ticket to earn the Pittsburgh Steelers a favorable playoff seed. After all, they are the Pittsburgh Steelers!
