Johnson Leads Waves to Win

Terrance Johnson scored a season-high 23 points to help Pepperdine hold on to win its fourth game in its last five with an 83-77 victory over Richmond in the opening round of the Stanford Invitational on Monday night at Palo Alto.

Jimmy Miggins had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Waves (4-3). Alex Acker added 16 points and Mike Westphal had 11. Pepperdine will play Montana in tonight’s championship game. The Grizzlies (4-6) upset No. 17 Stanford, 70-68.

Jeff Myers and Tony Dobbins each scored 17 for Richmond (3-3).

Myers made a three-point basket with 14 minutes 27 remaining to tie the score at 47. The Spiders, making their first trip to California in five years, scored 12 consecutive points in the first five minutes of the second half to put themselves back in the game.

The game was still tied with seven minutes remaining when Miggins made two free throws and Pepperdine began pulling away.

Pepperdine used a 16-0 run midway through the first half to forge a 25-15 lead with 6:48 left in the half to take control with a 40-27 lead at halftime.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 72, Loyola Marymount 70 -- Junior center Varnie Dennis made the decisive two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining in overtime for the Mustangs at San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly (2-4) held a 14-point lead at 58-44 with 8:55 remaining in regulation, but Loyola Marymount went on a 13-1 run. Loyola’s Brandon Worthy made one of two free throws with 48 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Worthy had a team-high 14 points for the Lions (5-4).

Shane Schilling scored 16 points for Cal Poly and Diaby Kamara had 14. Both players played their first game since the 2000-01 season because of NCAA transfer regulations.

The Mustangs missed all of their 16 three-point attempts.
