Sykora Misses His Chance

Petr Sykora was in a position to give the Mighty Ducks a two-goal lead in the first period Sunday, and possibly break the backs of the struggling Calgary Flames.

Sykora had a chance to score his second goal of the game after Calgary defenseman Bob Boughner was called for covering up the puck in the goalie crease. Sykora never seemed to have control of the puck as he charged toward goalie Roman Turek on the penalty shot. The puck slipped off Sykora’s stick as he went to his backhand to shoot.

“I thought I had him,” Sykora said. “It’s a one-on-one battle and he won.

“I know he’s a right-handed goalie and it’s tough to get the blocker up. So I tired to go backhand. He played me very well. I guess he gets the credit.”

Sykora scored on the only other penalty shot of his career on Jan. 6, 2000, against Buffalo when he was playing for New Jersey.

The Ducks’ Patric Kjellberg scored his second goal in as many games, which tied the score 2-2 in the second period Sunday. Jason Krog dug the puck from behind the net and centered it to Kjellberg, whose first shot was stopped. He then put back the rebound.

However, the two-game streak means little to Kjellberg, who has five goals this season. “You want your goals to mean something,” Kjellberg said. “I’d rather not scored and we won both games.”

Duck Defenseman Fredrik Olausson was a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game.
