From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The toll from Sunday’s brush fire rose to 36 homes destroyed and 5,240 acres burned, fire officials said.

The fire, which raced through avocado groves and million-dollar homes, may have started as a controlled fire by farmers burning brush. The cost of fighting the fire has been computed at $1.1 million.

Besides the houses, 17 outbuildings, one mobile home, 22 private vehicles, two fire engines and three smaller structures were destroyed. On Tuesday, the fire continued to burn in uninhabited sections of Camp Pendleton, but no structures were threatened.
