Paul Hubschmid, 84; Swiss Actor Appeared in German, U.S. Films

Swiss actor Paul Hubschmid, 84, who starred alongside Michael Caine in the 1966 film “Funeral in Berlin” and was often cast as the handsome charmer in German movies, died Monday in Berlin of a pulmonary embolism.

Born in Aarau, Hubschmid trained as an actor in Vienna and made his movie debut in 1938 in a Swiss production, “Fusilier Wipf.” During World War II, he appeared in German films such as “Meine Freundin Josefine” and “Love Letters.”

In Hollywood after World War II, Hubschmid starred in English-language productions such as 1949’s “Bagdad” with Maureen O’Hara, directed by Charles Lamont. He also appeared in the spy comedy “No Time for Flowers” and “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.”

Back in Germany, he appeared in Fritz Lang’s “The Tiger of Eschnapur” in 1959 and as agent Johnny Vulkan in “Funeral in Berlin,” directed by Guy Hamilton. Hubschmid was also known in Germany for his stage and television acting, drawing critical acclaim for his role in a Berlin production of “My Fair Lady.”
