Family Gets $11 Million in Police Shooting
An out-of-court settlement was reached in an $11-million wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of a man shot 11 times by police.
Dwayne Eli Sanchez, 26, died June 13, 1998, after being shot by Santa Maria police officers at the end of a chase.
Officers wanted to question Sanchez about a possible brandishing of a handgun.
The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.
Police said the shooting started when Sanchez put his Chevrolet El Camino in reverse, backing up toward the officers after his vehicle crashed into a utility pole. The Sanchez family claimed it was an “execution-style shooting.”
