Thibault’s Catch-22 Carries Blackhawks

Jocelyn Thibault stopped 22 shots for his second consecutive shutout and the Blackhawks extended their winning streak to six games with a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Chicago.

Alex Zhamnov had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks.

Kyle Calder also scored and Tony Amonte had two assists.

Thibault, who has four shutouts this season, hasn’t given up a goal over his last 125 minutes 37 seconds.

Edmonton 7, Montreal 6--Jochen Hecht scored two third-period goals and host Edmonton rallied for three goals in the third period.

Karl Dykhuis scored twice and Patrick Traverse, Brian Savage, Oleg Petrov and Doug Gilmour also had goals for Montreal.

Ryan Smyth, Scott Ferguson, Jason Smith and Sean Brown scored for the Oilers.

New York Islanders 3, Atlanta 2--Brad Isbister scored two second-period goals at Atlanta and the Islanders (21-13-5-2) matched last season’s victory total.

Alexei Yashin assisted on Isbister’s goals.

Mark Parrish had New York’s other goal.

Tampa Bay 3, Phoenix 0--In his return to Phoenix, Nikolai Khabibulin made 33 saves for his franchise-record sixth shutout this season.

Martin St. Louis, Zdeno Ciger and Dave Andreychuk scored.

Khabibulin was making his first appearance at America West Arena since May 4, 1999, when he started the Coyotes’ 1-0 loss to St. Louis in Game 7 of the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Columbus 4, Nashville 3--Serge Aubin and Rostislav Klesla scored in a span of 36 seconds in the second period for the Blue Jackets at Columbus, Ohio.

Blake Sloan, who had five assists in 52 games over the last two seasons with the Blue Jackets, assisted on the goals by Aubin and Klesla.

Philadelphia 4, Carolina 3--Jeremy Roenick scored the go-ahead goal with 10:11 left at Raleigh, N.C., and Marty Murray had the second two-goal game of his career.

Ron Francis scored the 501st goal of his career. Erik Cole and Martin Gelinas also scored for Carolina.

Buffalo 4, Minnesota 1--Martin Biron made 17 saves at St. Paul, Minn., for his first victory since Dec. 4.

J.P. Dumont, Jason Woolley, Vaclav Varada and Maxim Afinogenov scored for the Sabres, who ended a six-game road winless streak.

Antti Laaksonen scored for the Wild.
