New York Jets (10-6) at Oakland (10-6)

5 p.m. Saturday, Channel 7

The line: Oakland by 4

Injuries: NYJ--none. OAK--RB Charlie Garner (foot), T Lincoln Kennedy (shoulder), CB Charles Woodson (toe).

Story line: A month after winning the AFC West title, the Raiders are in disarray. They have lost three consecutive games; quarterback Rich Gannon has criticized teammates for lacking discipline; and kicker Sebastian Janikowski didn’t play in last week’s 24-22 loss to the Jets--even though he told a TV sideline reporter he was healthy enough to do so. That said, it will be awfully tough for the Jets to win in Oakland a second time in less than a week.

Key matchups: Garner vs. Jet linebackers: Garner caught 72 passes this season, so look for Gannon to turn to him when in trouble. Defensive end John Abraham vs. tackle Barry Sims: Abraham registered only one sack last week but was in Gannon’s face all afternoon. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet vs. cornerback Charles Woodson: This looks like a mismatch because Woodson is a far better athlete. But Chrebet’s ability to get open, his soft hands and precise routes make him far more dangerous than he looks.

When the Jets have the ball: New York will need better performances from Vinny Testaverde and Curtis Martin to beat Oakland again. Martin’s running sets the tone. If he gets 25 carries and is effective, New York probably will control the tempo. Testaverde needs to limit his mistakes and make better use of his receivers.

When the Raiders have the ball: With the league’s 24th-ranked running game, Gannon has frequently forced passes. The Raiders need to get power running from Tyrone Wheatley and off-tackle bursts from Garner to take advantage of a vulnerable Jet front seven. Gannon needs to spread the ball more to keep the Jet defense guessing.
