Knee Injury to Sideline Davenport Four Months

Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right knee Friday and is expected to be sidelined for at least four months.

Davenport’s agent, Tony Godsick of IMG, said the surgery to correct a full thickness cartilage defect on the 25-year-old Davenport’s lateral tibia was successful. Godsick wasn’t immediately available for further comment.

Dr. Richard Steadman of the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo., said the prognosis “is good for a full recovery, but the recovery will require four to six months of rehabilitation.”

Martina Hingis completed a Swiss sweep of the Adidas International today, successfully defending her title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over American Meghann Shaughnessy at Sydney, Australia.

It was Hingis’ first WTA Tour title in 11 months. She recently returned to competition following an ankle injury.

In the men’s final, Switzerland’s Roger Federer beat Argentine qualifier Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-3, 6-3. ....

Greg Rusedski beat Jiri Novak, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (2), to reach the final of the Heineken Open at Auckland, New Zealand. Rusedski will face unseeded Jerome Golmard of France in today’s final. Golmard defeated Switzerland’s Michel Kratochvil, 6-2, 6-2.... Pete Sampras beat Australian journeyman Scott Draper, 6-2, 7-6 (5), in the Kooyong Classic at Melbourne to set up a match against Andre Agassi in the final of the exhibition tournament.... UCLA quarterback Cory Paus is spending the weekend in L.A. County jail, serving a 96-hour sentence for his second alcohol-related driving conviction in two years. Paus, scheduled to report to jail Tuesday, had the date changed and was taken into custody and transported to the Twin Towers facility Thursday morning.

He must also pay a $1,300 fine, enroll in an 18-month alcohol-diversion program and serve a five-year probation. He may drive only to and from campus.

Former Ohio State quarterback Steve Bellisari reported to jail in Columbus to serve a three-day sentence for drunk driving in November.

Responding to a surprising $700 million late bid from Charles Dolan, the Boston Red Sox held telephone discussions with the team’s limited partners.

Dolan, the chairman of Cablevision Systems Corp., made the new bid Thursday, three weeks after the Red Sox agreed to a $660 million offer from a group headed by Florida Marlin owner John Henry.

A second baseball owner admitted that one of his companies accepted a loan from a business controlled by Minnesota Twin owner Carl Pohlad.

Jerry McMorris, owner of the Colorado Rockies, said Commissioner Bud Selig gave advance approval for the loan to McMorris’ Timnath Farms Inc.

Hall of famer Kirby Puckett and his wife are getting divorced, the couple announced, less than a month after Tonya Puckett told police her husband threatened to kill her during an argument. The former Minnesota Twin star denied the claim and no charges were filed.

The Seattle Mariners added another Japanese star, signing former Angel right-hander Shigetoshi Hasegawa to a one-year contract with an option for a second season. ... Dodger official Akihiro “Ike” Ikuhara, an assistant to former owner Walter O’Malley, was inducted posthumously into the Japanese baseball Hall of Fame in Tokyo.

The Galaxy hired Doug Hamilton, former Miami Fusion general manager, nearly a month after Tim Luce resigned the same position. The Galaxy also acquired forward Chris Albright in a trade with Washington D.C. United for draft choices and selected Jamaican national team midfielder Tyrone Marshall in Major League Soccer’s allocation draft.

The New England Revolution selected all-stars Mamadou Diallo and Carlos Llamosa in the MLS dispersal draft. Colorado picked defender Pablo Mastroeni from Miami with the top pick and D.C. United took former Miami goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
