Giant Power Surge Hits Rockies

The San Francisco Giants had a record-setting night for homers--without getting any from Barry Bonds.

Damon Minor, Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Reggie Sanders each homered twice to tie a major league record as the San Francisco Giants routed the Colorado Rockies, 18-5, Tuesday at Coors Field.

The Giants became the 16th team to have three players with multiple homers in a game. Their seven homers was the most since hitting a club-record eight against Milwaukee on April 30, 1961.

Minnesota was the last team with three players to have at least two homers in a game, on July 12, 2001, against Milwaukee. The 10 combined home runs between the two teams tied a Coors Field record, which had happened four other times.

San Francisco had 23 hits and seven homers--two in an eight-run first inning--for its fifth win in seven games.

Minor was four for six and had two-run homers in the second and fourth. Shinjo had a career-high five hits after going hitless in 17 at-bats. He hit his second career grand slam off Denny Neagle (4-6) in the first and hit a solo shot in the sixth.

“We got taken to the shed, taken to the wood shed,” Colorado Manager Clint Hurdle said. “We couldn’t get outs. It was not a good outing.”

San Francisco sent 13 hitters to the plate in the first inning.
