MLS All-Stars to Play National Team

Looking to ride the wave of popularity created by the United States’ run in the World Cup, Major League Soccer has altered its All-Star game.

Rather than the usual all-MLS inclusive match, a collection of MLS All-Stars, who will be voted in by fans, players, coaches and media, will play the U.S. national team on Aug. 3 at RFK Stadium in Washington.

“All of America and a generation of soccer fans have waited a lifetime for a magical World Cup performance like this,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said of the U.S. advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in 70 years.

“This U.S. team achieved great things for our sport during their impressive run in South Korea and Major League Soccer wants to celebrate this achievement.”

The exhibition will also give some MLS players a chance they otherwise wouldn’t have had at becoming All-Stars as 11 members of the U.S. national team play for MLS clubs.
