Crowning Point on Roll

Share

Disturbingthepeace isn’t the only hot horse running for owner David Milch and trainer Darrell Vienna.

Six days after Disturbingthepeace won his fourth in a row by shocking Kona Gold and others in the $300,000 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Handicap, Crowning Point will try for his third consecutive win in tonight’s first race.

Claimed for $16,000 on March 9 at Santa Anita by Milch, a successful television producer-writer who lists “NYPD Blue” and “Hill Street Blues” among his credits, Crowning Point needed a drop in class before he went on a mini-roll.

After finishing fourth in his first two starts for his new connections, the 4-year-old Lil Tyler gelding prevailed by a neck over favored Coke’s Tribute when running for an $8,000 claiming price on May 24. Returned 16 days later, the California-bred won by a neck again, edging Fast ‘N Nab at the $10,000 level.

Worse than second only once in six starts at Hollywood Park, Crowning Point stays at the same plateau and will break from the rail again, just as he did in his June 9 victory. He is the 5-2 choice on Russ Hudak’s morning line.

David Flores started riding the bay after he was claimed four months ago and will be back on the horse tonight.

In the second race, Desert Drama, a daughter of Bertrando owned and bred by Pam and Marty Wygod and trained by Nick Canani, will make her debut going a flat mile on the turf against eight other California-bred fillies and mares.

She’s a half sister to Hoovergethekeys, a multiple-stakes winner who scored an upset in a stakes at Pleasanton last Sunday.

Race of the day: The fourth at Hollywood Park is a wide-open turf affair for fillies and mares. There aren’t many throwouts in the field of 10.
