Hot Start for Lewis, Spawr

Share

If the first two days of the meet are any indication, Craig Lewis and Bill Spawr are trainers to watch this summer at Del Mar.

Lewis and Spawr have combined to win seven of the first 17 races. Lewis, who has three victories, will have two starters and Spawr, who had two wins on Wednesday and Thursday, has three on today’s card, the first of seven twilight programs. Post time today and for the next three Fridays is 4 p.m., then, for the final three weeks of the meet, the Friday post is 3:30 p.m.

Spawr will be represented by Heightenedawarenes in the first, Aim For The Moon in the third, the first leg of a pick six that has a carryover of $93,851, and Mandan in the eighth. Lewis, meanwhile, will send out a pair of comebackers--Comstock King in the first and Sabre Tooth Tiger in the eighth.

A 6-year-old gelding, Heightenedawarenes has seen better days and was a vet scratch before the start of the fifth race on July 6 at Hollywood Park, but the California-bred has been 1-2 in six of seven starts at Del Mar, so he could wake up with the change in scenery.

Aim For The Moon is making her first start in a claimer and could be the one to catch in the first leg of the pick six. Mandan is an 0-for-23 maiden who could share in the exotics in the finale.

Comstock King has won two of three at Del Mar, but the trouble is those two wins came nearly two years ago. Lewis won with the returning Swordfish on opening day.

An 0-for-9 maiden, Sabre Tooth Tiger will be running for the first time since Sept. 7.

Race of the day: Multiple stakes winners Forbidden Apple and Del Mar Show head a solid field in the $150,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga.

The Baruch is a Grade II at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Who’s hot: Laffit Pincay Jr. He began the meet with three winners, including his first Oceanside Stakes victory since 1987.

He’ll try for his first win in the $125,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders Assn. Stakes since 1992 when he rides Magic Smoke tonight.

Who’s not: Jason Lumpkins. Shockingly, the jockey didn’t win a single race at Solano, losing with all 14 of his mounts.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes keying Green Eyed Lady with Yet Anothernatalie, Imveryprivate and Sweet Olympio.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/3. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11.80/$16.80. Total money bet: $34.
