Schilling Shows No Ill Effects

Curt Schilling, showing no effects from a high fever, gave up three hits in seven innings to become baseball’s first 11-game winner as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Houston Astros, 10-4, Monday night at Phoenix.

Schilling (11-1), who had a 104-degree fever Sunday night, gave up one run, struck out eight and walked none. He has not issued a walk in his last five starts, a string of 37 innings and 138 batters, and has 131 strikeouts and eight walks this season.

Counting the postseason, Schilling improved to 22-1 in starts following an Arizona loss.

Arizona’s offense broke loose after sputtering on a seven-game trip.

Erubiel Durazo ended an 0-for-21 drought with a two-run homer, his sixth homer since coming off the disabled list May 15. Jose Guillen drove in two with a bases-loaded single and Junior Spivey tripled in two more.

Trainer Paul Lessard said Schilling had been treated for strep throat since Sunday, although he hadn’t been tested for it. Schilling gave up a run-scoring double to Geoff Blum in the fifth and retired the next eight batters before leaving with a nine-run lead.

Milwaukee 7, Chicago 6--Paul Bako and Lenny Harris hit consecutive homers to start a five-run seventh inning at Milwaukee and the Brewers overcame Sammy Sosa’s 20th home run.

The Brewers trailed, 5-1, in the fifth after Jamey Wright gave up four home runs, two to Fred McGriff.

Harris’ third career pinch-hit homer pulled the Brewers within 5-4. Jeffrey Hammonds had a run-scoring single and Richie Sexson had a two-run double to put Milwaukee ahead, 6-5.

Atlanta 5, New York 4--Vinny Castilla hit a grand slam in the first inning at Atlanta and Andruw Jones hit a tiebreaking homer against Steve Trachsel (3-6) in the sixth.

The Braves extended their division lead to a season-high two games, winning for the seventh time in nine games. The second-place Mets lost their third in a row.

Montreal 7, Pittsburgh 5--Troy O’Leary hit a two-run triple at Montreal, and the Expos took advantage of sloppy defense by the Pirates.

The Expos scored three unearned runs in the fifth, aided by two errors, including first baseman Kevin Young’s throwing error on Jose Vidro’s two-out grounder that allowed Orlando Cabrera to score from third to end a 3-3 tie.

San Francisco 11, San Diego 3--Benito Santiago and Marvin Benard hit three-run homers at San Diego, and the Giants won for only the fourth time in 11 games.

Santiago’s homer highlighted a six-run third inning. Tsuyoshi Shinjo homered leading off the five-run eighth, and Benard hit a homer three batters later. Jeff Kent had a run-scoring double and finished with three hits.

Benard, a late fill-in for injured outfielder Reggie Sanders, also had two doubles.
