KMFDM Returns for More Sonic Savagery

“KMFDM is back for more/ KMFDM will never stop,” shouted Sascha Konietzko during the German industrial-rock group’s opening number Tuesday at the Palace. Delivered against the sonic onslaught provided by the five-piece band, the song, “DIY,” was like a declaration of war.

It was an appropriate opener for the band that has at times been thrust into an us-against-the-world position--most recently when the two teenage killers at Columbine High School turned out to be KMFDM fans. In response to the subsequent criticism and attention, Konietzko “disbanded” the group, which entailed changing its name to MDFMK (figure it out).

Now back under its original moniker, KMFDM was greeted by an eager crowded floor when it hit the Palace stage. Following “DIY” with “Attak/Reload” and “Dirty” (longtime Konietzko collaborator Tim Skold came out looking like Marilyn Manson to provide vocals for the latter) from the new album, “Attak,” KMFDM displayed a sonic savagery that puts to shame all the nu-metal bands.

While there was no way the group could maintain the opening intensity throughout its two-hour set, there were enough highlights, including the techno-driven “Megalomaniacal” and the new album’s “Sturm and Drang,” to leave little doubt that KMFDM is indeed back.
