SUMMER SOLSTICE
The mountain’s green and shining
And white rocks at the top.
It’s the longest day of the year.
It’ll never be lighter than this.
I climb in good boots,
Sure on the slopes,
Proof against the wind
And bright against loss,
(These anoraks can be seen at a mile).
Behind me the sun slips.
I climb fast.
It’s the longest day of the year.
The mountain’s purple, and I reach
The black rocks at the top.
I mean well,
But I can’t climb faster
Than the world turns.
It’ll never be lighter than this.
