Knight Is Still the Chairman of the Boors

Share

When Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight’s chair almost gave way beneath him during a news conference Monday, he quickly tossed it aside.

“That’s the furthest [it’s farthest, Bob] I’ve thrown a chair in a long time,” Knight quipped, alluding to an infamous chair-tossing incident in 1985 when he was Indiana’s coach.

Knight threw a plastic chair across the court after he was called for a technical foul against Purdue. He let the chair go as a Purdue player stepped to the line to shoot the technical. Knight was ejected from the game.

More Knight: John Feinstein, the author of “A Season on the Brink,” a best-selling book on Knight, is not pleased with television’s version, which will be shown on ESPN and ESPN2 on Sunday.

“They turned it into a cartoon,” he told Ed Sherman of the Chicago Tribune.

Wrote Sherman: “Feinstein, though, did give credit to Brian Dennehy for his portrayal of Knight. Not surprisingly, the veteran actor gives a riveting performance.

“Dennehy portrays Knight in full throat. He doesn’t look or sound like the former Indiana coach, but he does capture his intensity and rage.”

And finally: The Associated Press reports that the basketball coach known for his sticky defense is promoting his own sticky food.

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun and his family launched what they hope will become a line of fancy-food labels, Coach’s Pride. Leading off is Caramel Nut Clusters, which hit the shelves Monday at grocery stores in Connecticut. Other products will follow, with an emphasis on “heart-healthy” foods.

A portion of each sale will go to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for its work in pediatric cardiac care.

Calhoun said he hopes his company will help many other businesses throughout the state, but the charity donations are the most important to him.
