Redondo Puts Brakes on Ventura

Share

Redondo Union High found a way to do something few before it could: stop the state’s most prolific outside-shooting girls’ basketball team.

The Sea Hawks used a match-up zone defense to tame a Ventura team that had made a state-record 275 three-point shots, taking a 50-34 victory Saturday night in a Division II Southern California Regional semifinal game at Ventura High.

Jenni Dooley, who had made 106 three-pointers and was averaging 19.5 points for top-seeded Ventura, missed all 13 of her shots and finished with one point. Katy O’Brien, who scored 61 points in her previous two games, had nine points.

“I can’t believe we did that, to tell you the truth,” said Coach Marcello Enriquez of fourth-seeded Redondo (25-7), which advances to the 2 p.m. regional final on Saturday at Long Beach Arena against second-seeded Fullerton Troy (29-3), a 57-54 winner over Bakersfield Stockdale.

Ofa Tulikihihifo had 13 points and seven rebounds and Krista Areyan added 10 points and seven rebounds for Redondo, the Southern Section Division II-A champion. Freshman Caitlin O’Neill scored 13 points for Ventura (29-3), which made only 12 of 50 shots (six of 32 from three-point range) and saw its 18-game winning streak end.
