Cullen Is Gearing Up for New Line of Work

Since forward Matt Cullen returned to the lineup after being benched for a short spell in January, he’s been one off the team’s best players.

Now Coach Bryan Murray is ready to throw another challenge at him.

Cullen, who has played center at every level of his hockey career, will open tonight’s game against Pittsburgh at right wing. He will skate on a line with center Andy McDonald and left wing Mike Leclerc.

“I’ve played [on the wing] maybe for a game or two but nothing more,” said Cullen, second on the team in scoring with 16 goals and 40 points. “It’s going to be a big change for me because I won’t be involved all of the time.

“The main thing for me will be getting used to the timing on breakouts. But other than that, it’s great because I get a chance to come into the offensive side on my weak side with an option to cut in. It’s easier for me to make a play on that side of the ice.”

Murray has been pleased with Cullen’s game since he sat him down and is hoping the 25-year-old former national high school player of the year is ready to take the next step.

With Steve Rucchin back in the lineup and playing well, Murray had to find a way to maintain playing time for McDonald and Cullen. That’s one reason behind the move.

“There’s still a stage for [Cullen] to go through,” Murray said. “Both Andy and Matt have been on a good string. Having them together gives me a chance to play them more often and gives us a chance to score more goals when they are on the ice.”
