Unbeaten Fillies Meet

Share

Take Charge Lady has developed into one of the better 3-year-old fillies, having swept a pair of stakes in Louisiana, and will be one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Oaks on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Today at Gulfstream Park, Belterra, last seen beating Take Charge Lady in the Golden Rod at Churchill on Nov. 24, will make her 2002 debut in the $250,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes.

Owned by Robert Manfuso and trained by Carl Nafzger, Belterra, a daughter of Unbridled, who won the Kentucky Derby for Nafzger in 1990, is perfect in three starts.

Before her win in the Golden Rod, which, like the Bonnie Miss, is a Grade II, she had broken her maiden at Keeneland, then rolled to a 10-allowance win when stretched out to a mile.

Jon Court, who rode her in all three of her races as a 2-year-old, will be aboard Belterra when she breaks from the outside in the field of six.

The Bonnie Miss, run at 11/8 miles, attracted another unbeaten filly.

Nonsuch Bay, who will leave from the rail, is two for two for trainer Frank Alexander at Gulfstream. She will be ridden by John Velasquez.

Rounding out the lineup for the race are Miu Miu, Dust Me Off, Ms Brookski and Stormy Frolic.

Meanwhile, at Aqueduct, Snake Mountain will make his second American start for trainer James Jerkens.

A gelded son of A.P. Indy purchased for $950,000 as a yearling, he broke his maiden by a dozen lengths in his first start on the dirt after four turf failures in Ireland.

He will be favored against only five rivals in the 11/8-mile allowance contest.

Race of the day: Megahertz, impressive in her U.S. debut in the Blue Norther more than two months ago, is the 8-5 favorite in the $75,000 Some Sensation at one mile on the turf today at Santa Anita. She and 6-1 shot Nunatall are trained by Bobby Frankel.

Who’s hot: Victor Espinoza. The jockey had three winners Wednesday at Santa Anita.

Who’s not: David Donk. The trainer, based at Gulfstream Park now, is only one for 31 this year.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Skywriting and Red Hot And Blue in the fifth, Drawn Sword and Sheikh Fever in the sixth, using Megahertz, Bella Bella Bella and the Ayzal-Orlass entry in the seventh and using Sam’s Dusty and Pickled Bay in the eighth.

Winners: Previous Day/Meet Total: 3/160. Money: Previous Day/Meet Total: $13.40/$940.20. Total money bet: $976.
