Redistricting Options Offered

Los Angeles Redistricting Commissioner Richard Close has proposed two alternatives to plans for City Council districts in the San Fernando Valley, but they immediately drew concerns for dividing communities of interest.

Close has opposed a plan to create a new 2nd District that extends from Sunland-Tujunga to Encino, and proposed an alternative that would combine North Hollywood and Sunland-Tujunga in the district, put Encino in the 5th Council District and Studio City and Sherman Oaks in the 4th District. A second alternative would put part of Encino in the 5th District.

However, Commissioner Ron Turovsky, who was appointed by 5th District Councilman Jack Weiss, objected to Close’s proposals, saying one splits the Orthodox Jewish community along Chandler Boulevard into two districts and the other divides Encino among three districts.

Under a plan tentatively approved by the full commission, the Chandler Jewish enclave would remain in the 5th District.

The full commission is scheduled to vote on a plan March 26.
