Teachers’ Lament

Re “Should Teacher Legislation Go to the Head of the Class?” Commentary, March 19: So the teachers unions are so powerful, are they?
This state ranks in the bottom half in the nation in per-pupil funding for education. Given the fact that teachers unions have the only true lobbyists for school improvements, it is obvious that the California teachers unions are already essentially impotent and subservient to the demands of the state Legislature. Powerful? The union has to fight to get school funding to increase by cost-of-living allowances.
Teachers unions are already as inconsequential as they could possibly be in California.
