Earthquakes Roll Behind DeRosario, Donovan

Dwayne DeRosario scored off a rebound early in the first half as the defending Major League Soccer champion San Jose Earthquakes opened the season with a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Burn on Saturday night in front of 15,214 at Dallas.

DeRosario fired Jimmy Conrad’s missed header into the right corner from 12 yards away in the 11th minute, and Landon Donovan added a goal in the 46th minute.

San Jose’s defenders set the tempo, limiting the Burn to only one shot on goal in the first 65 minutes. The Earthquakes had five shots on goal during that time.

Dallas’ Ronald Cerritos faced his former team for the first time since an off-season trade that sent Ariel Graziani to San Jose. Cerritos had a goal disallowed in the 31st minute when he was ruled offsides.

Colorado 1, Kansas City 1--Midfielder Chris Brown scored on a header late in the second half to rally the Wizards in front of 11,769 at Kansas City, Mo. Preki delivered a near-perfect free kick from 18 yards out to Brown, who headed the ball past Colorado goalkeeper Scott Garlick. Brown narrowly missed on another header in the sixth minute of overtime. Colorado midfielder Chris Henderson scored against his former team in the 16th minute, off an assist from John Spencer.

New York-New Jersey 3, New England 1--Revolution defender Carlos Llamosa headed a ball into his own net in the 72nd minute for the go-ahead goal as the MetroStars won before 13,234 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Rodrigo Faria and Clint Mathis also scored, and newcomer Diego Serna had two assists for the MetroStars.

Chicago 2, Columbus 0--Columbus defender Chad McCarty knocked the ball into his own net and Josh Wolff scored late, helping the Fire win before 18,450 at Columbus, Ohio. The loss was the Crew’s first in seven home openers and the team’s first regular-season defeat at home in 11 games.
