A Doubleheader for Frankel

About 50 minutes before Bobby Frankel tries to win his first Kentucky Derby with Medaglia d’Oro, the trainer will try to win Hollywood Park’s Senorita Stakes for the third time in four years.

Nunatall will try to emulate Fantastic Filly last year and Coracle (1999) in the $100,000 Senorita, a Grade III at a mile on the turf.

A 3-year-old, English-bred filly owned by Ed Gann, who also races Medaglia d’Oro, Nunatall will have to step up her game if she wants to win for the first time in the U.S.

A winner of one of three in France, the daughter of Night Shift was second as the 17-10 favorite behind stablemate Megahertz in the Blue Norther in her first start in California on Jan. 9.

She then was fifth and fourth in the La Habra and Some Sensation, respectively, at Santa Anita.

The filly to beat in the Senorita, which is not part of a pick six that has a carryover of $121,130.92, is High Society. An Irish-bred, she made a successful bow for trainer Laura De Seroux, winning the aforementioned La Habra Stakes at nearly 10-1 on March 1.

At Aqueduct, 3-year-olds who were not Kentucky Derby material will get together in the $150,000 Withers at one mile.

Among those who will participate are Shah Jehan, a $4.4 million yearling who earned his first U.S. victory last month at Keeneland for trainer Wayne Lukas, Monthir, who was third behind Roman Dancer in the seven-furlong Bay Shore on April 13, Listen Here and Fast Decision.

Race of the day: Minister Thatcher, a Deputy Minister filly who made a successful bow at 28-1 on April 6 for trainer Richard Mandella, leads a field of 10 fillies and mares going 51/2 furlongs on the turf in today’s eighth race at Hollywood Park.

Who’s hot: Jose Valdivia Jr. The jockey won three races on Thursday, scoring with 11-1 longshot Lasting Tribute, 2-1 second choice Irguns Angel and 7-10 favorite Go For Greed.

Who’s not: Howard Belvoir. The trainer lost with his first 18 starters at Bay Meadows.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Cintegrity, Golden Bonus and Starring Willy in the seventh, singling Minister Thatcher in the eighth and using Cabaret Dancer, Memori and Winonefortheroses in the ninth.
