Art museum delays its move

Share

The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco has postponed the opening of its new home at the former Main Library in the Civic Center from Jan. 23 to March 20.

Museum officials attributed the delay to complexities of the construction project, including seismic upgrades, restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic beaux-arts structure.

More time is also needed to move the 14,000-piece collection from the old facility in Golden Gate Park and install it in the refurbished library.

The $160.5-million project, for which $155 million has been raised, was designed by Italian architect Gae Aulenti.
