A Corona police officer was shot three times by a wanted felon in an alley Thursday night and was undergoing surgery at Riverside Community Hospital.

The officer exchanged fire with the man, who also was hit and hospitalized. The attacker, whose name wasn’t released, was identified only as a parolee. He was undergoing surgery at another hospital. Neither man’s condition was known, but Sgt. Jerry Rodriguez said of his colleague, “It sounds like he’s going to make it.”

The attack occurred at 7:47 p.m. behind a commercial building and apartment complex. The officer and his partner had gone to the block on a tip that the felon, wanted for a weapons violation, was in the area. As they approached the man to make an arrest near 6th and Smith streets, shots were fired, police said, and the officer was hit twice in the abdomen and once in the shoulder.
