California Wins a Wild One, 55-38

Kyle Boller matched his career high with five touchdown passes to lead California past No. 25 Arizona State, 55-38, Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State lost despite 477 yards passing from Andrew Walter.

Joe Igber rushed for a season-high 144 yards and caught a 17-yard touchdown pass for the Bears, 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference, in a wildgame that featured six lead changes.

The Sun Devils (7-4, 4-2) were doomed by three fumbles deep in their own territory, an interception returned 85 yards for a Cal touchdown, and a blocked punt that was returned for a score.

California scored the game’s last 20 points after Arizona State took a 38-35 lead on Hakim Hill’s two-yard touchdown run with 2:36 left in the third quarter.

Walter completed 29 of 50 passes, including four touchdowns, and broke Arizona State’s single-season record for passing yards even though he didn’t start until the fifth game.

With two games to play, Walter has 2,994 yards, breaking the record of 2,878 set by Danny White in 1973. His 25 touchdown passes are No. 2 on the ASU single-season list.

Boller completed 16 of 35 passes for 213 yards and was intercepted once.

Washington 41, Oregon State 29 -- Cody Pickett threw for 262 yards to become the Huskies’ career passing leader, and Derrick Johnson had two of Washington’s five interceptions in a victory at Seattle.

Rich Alexis had two one-yard touchdown runs, John Anderson kicked field goals of 23 and 52 yards and Washington (5-5, 2-4) avoided the school’s first four-game losing streak since 1974.

Johnson returned one interception 42 yards for a touchdown, and Chris Massey took another 25 yards into the end zone. The Beavers (6-4, 2-4) hurt themselves with mistakes and sustained a setback in their bid for a bowl game.

It was a historic day for Pickett, who came in 87 yards away from becoming Washington’s career passing leader.

Early in the second quarter, a 14-yard pass to Alexis moved him past Brock Huard (5,742 yards) on the list.
