Foreign Oscar submissions arriving
Competition for the foreign-language film Oscar is already coming from filmmakers on distant shores.
Spain has entered Fernando Leon’s “Los Lunes al Sol” (“Mondays in the Sun”), a drama about unemployed dockyard workers. It stars Javier Bardem, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as writer Reinaldo Arenas in “Before Night Falls” (2000).

Oscar year -- An article in Wednesday’s Calendar about foreign films vying for Academy Awards mistakenly said Roberto Benigni won the best actor Oscar for “Life Is Beautiful” in 1997. He won the Oscar in 1999.
Italy has submitted Roberto Benigni’s “Pinocchio,” the live-action version of the fairy tale. Benigni, who stars as the wooden puppet, won an Academy Award for best actor in 1997 for “La Vita e Bella” (“Life Is Beautiful”). The movie, which Benigni co-wrote, also won best foreign language film.
Films submitted previously include Mexico’s “El Crimen del Padre Amaro” (“The Crime of Father Amaro”), Russia’s “House of Fools” and Belgium’s “Le Fils” (“The Son”).
Deadline for submission was Nov. 1, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to release a list of all the foreign-language submissions later this month.
The Oscars will be held March 23 at the Kodak Theatre.
