Tennessee Delivers Another Blowout

Gwen Jackson scored 20 of her 29 points in the first half and Kara Lawson scored 16 to help No. 4 Tennessee beat No. 21 George Washington, 83-61, Tuesday night at Nashville.

The Lady Vols (2-1) rebounded from a 76-55 loss to top-ranked Duke on Sunday, a game in which they turned the ball over 23 times and shot only 31%. Tennessee built a 29-point second-half lead against George Washington.

Cathy Joens, from Santa Ana Calvary Chapel High, led George Washington (1-1) with 22 points.

No. 9 Vanderbilt 73, Syracuse 65 -- Jenni Benningfield had 19 points and eight rebounds to help the Commodores (2-0) withstand a late rally at Syracuse, N.Y. Syracuse fell to 0-3.

No. 10 Notre Dame 107, Cleveland State 65 -- Katy Flecky had 22 points and Jacqueline Batteast had 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Fighting Irish at South Bend, Ind., in their opener.

No. 16 Texas 90, McNeese State 25 -- Stacy Stephens scored 15 points to help the Longhorns (1-1) win at Austin, Texas. Texas allowed the fewest points since a 72-24 win over St. Mary’s in 1976.

No. 18 Boston College 63, Holy Cross 45 -- Becky Gottstein finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds and the Eagles (2-0) broke open a close game at Worcester, Mass., with a 17-0 run in the second half. Holy Cross is 1-1.

No. 23 Oklahoma 79, Sam Houston State 52 -- Maria Villarroel scored 31 points for the Sooners (2-1) at Norman, Okla.
