Loyola Falls to Villanova

Freshman Jason Fraser had 24 points and 15 rebounds on Thursday as Villanova defeated Loyola Marymount, 87-71, in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Fraser made five of seven shots from the field and 14 of 16 free throws for Villanova (2-1), which plays No. 9 Michigan State, an 80-60 winner over Montana, in the semifinals.

Andy Osborn had 17 points and Charles Brown added 12 for the Lions (2-1), who held a 47-46 lead with 14:48 to play. Fraser scored 14 of Villanova’s next 18 points to give the Wildcats a 64-58 lead.

Alana Beard scored 15 points as No. 1 Duke (3-0) held Hampton (1-1) to 23% shooting in a 71-34 victory at Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands.... Also at Charlotte Amalie, No. 17 Arkansas (3-0) edged Old Dominion, 54-49, behind India Lewis’ 19 points. The Lady Monarchs are 0-2.... Shereka Wright scored 19 points and No. 6 Purdue (3-0) defeated Savannah State, 103-25, at West Lafayette, Ind. The Tigers are 0-3.
