Police arrested 73 people and wrote 483 citations during a 20-hour crackdown in a crime-plagued area of the north San Fernando Valley, officials said Thursday.

More than 100 uniformed and undercover officers were deployed from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday in a target zone bordered by Nordhoff Street, the San Diego Freeway, Roscoe Boulevard and Wakefield Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department Capt. John Sherman, who was in charge of the operation.

Most arrests involved misdemeanors such as drinking in public or trespassing, police said. Seven arrests were drug-related and 14 involved driving under the influence.

Authorities said citations were issued primarily for vehicle violations, including speeding and illegal turns.

Police also impounded 45 vehicles because the drivers were not licensed or did not have proper registration.
