Touring San Diego With Military Precision

Share

Participants in a new tour of San Diego get a taste of military life at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

“Get off my bus! And you better do it quickly!” a drill instructor orders after he boards their amphibious tour vehicle inside the gate. Tourists are required to stand in line, on painted yellow footprints, while their IDs are checked before they can visit the depot’s museum, obstacle course and other areas.

The stop at the depot, which administers basic training to recruits from across the Western U.S., is part of the 2 1/2-hour Tour of Patriotism run by Old Town Trolley Tours. Riding SEAL sea-and-land vehicles, visitors splash and roll past the North Island Naval Air Station, the Navy submarine base along Point Loma and other sites related to the city’s military.
