The American Bowling Congress has certified Pat and Joey Dineen as the third father-son tandem to bowl 300s in the same league game. Pat, 49, and Joey, 21, did it at the AMF Indian River Lanes in Virginia Beach, Va., on April 25.

“When I stepped up in the 10th frame, no one was bowling in the house,” Pat told the Hampton Roads Daily Press. “It reminded me of the first time I bowled 300 ... the entire house stopped.”

Comment by Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “In fact, it got so quiet you could almost hear a ... nah, too easy.”

More Perry: “News flash: USA Today reports that Augusta National is a par 72 in more ways than one. Its average member is 72 years of age, with Ben Gilmer carding a high of 25-over 97.

“That makes it one of the few golf venues where it’s actually a good thing to be a few strokes behind the leaders.”

Is the clock ticking? The Yankees have been eliminated from the playoffs, but Manager Joe Torre told Mike Vaccaro of the New Jersey Star-Ledger that calls from owner George Steinbrenner have all been supportive.

“He knows that the job he has done in seven years as Yankee manager may have brought him a deeper line of credit than any other employee has ever enjoyed in the 29-year reign of Steinbrenner,” Vaccaro wrote. “But there is a limit to that. Even for him.”

Willing to oblige: Boston Celtic forward Vin Baker paid teammate Kedrick Brown $10,000 to surrender jersey No. 42.

Coach Jim O’Brien told the Boston Herald: “Is there anything he wants from me? Shoes? How about playing time? I’m sure we can work something out.”

Midshipmen mishaps: “When we decide to self-destruct,” says Navy football Coach Paul Johnson, whose team has had 15 turnovers in losing four games, “we’re really good at it.”

Brett from Motor City: From the Caught on the Fly column in the Sporting News: “A Stanley Cup isn’t the only thing Brett Hull’s picked up in his time in Dee-troit. The Spies at the Wings’ training camp spotted Golden Brett tooling around in a jet-black ’64 Lincoln Continental convertible. Hey-yo, talk about buying into Motown.”

Bet on it: Tom FitzGerald of the San Francisco Chronicle, after the St. Paul Pioneer Press had reported that Metrodome noise levels reached 107 decibels during Game 3 of the Twins-A’s playoff series.

“If that’s a record, it undoubtedly will be broken at the Yankees’ first postseason staff meeting as soon as George Steinbrenner walks into the room.”

Looking back: On this day in 1991, Chip Beck shot the second sub-60 round in PGA Tour history, a 59 at the Las Vegas Invitational. Beck carded a 29-30, 13 under par, to match Al Geiberger’s second round at the 1977 Memphis Classic.

Trivia answer: Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals, 17, against the Detroit Tigers on Oct. 2, 1968.

And finally: “The latest NCAA figures have Tennessee’s football players graduating at a rate of 5%,” says Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s no wonder the Vols can’t execute a center snap. They get confused when the count goes past ‘hut two.’ ”
