Enforcer Brown Added to Roster

The Mighty Ducks got tougher Friday, claiming Vancouver’s Mike Brown off waivers. To make room, they designated center Jason Krog for assignment.

Brown, 23, was a first-round draft pick of the Florida Panthers in 1997. He was traded to Vancouver in a six-player deal that sent Pavel Bure to the Panthers in 1999.

“He hasn’t done everything we thought he would,” said Duck General Manager Bryan Murray, who was the Panthers’ general manager at the time. “We think he has the potential to be a regular player. Obviously, he’s behind schedule. He hasn’t always shown the commitment to get there. I think now he really wants to be a player. He just got married. All those things help.”

Brown, who is 6 feet 4, 225 pounds, will support the Ducks’ Kevin Sawyer in the enforcer role. Brown had 72 penalty minutes in 15 games with Vancouver last season.

Krog, who had an impressive training camp, will be sent to minor league Cincinnati, but he must clear waivers.

Left wing Stanislav Chistov had the most impressive NHL debut in 25 years with a goal and three assists in the Ducks’ 4-3 victory over St. Louis on Thursday.

Al Hill set the NHL record when he scored five points in his first game for Philadelphia on Feb. 14, 1977.

“[Chistov] was the best player I had seen in the draft in 10 years,” NHL scout Jack Ferreira said. “What I like about him is his ability to make something out of nothing.”

Former goalie Guy Hebert will return to the Ducks as director of the newly formed alumni association.... A group of 12 players from the Ducks’ first season (1993-94), including Hebert, Stu Grimson and Todd Ewen, will be honored before the Ducks’ home opener against Detroit on Sunday and will sign autographs between periods. The ceremony is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
