Return of Fleet Week Hailed After 9/11 Hiatus

A chorus of foghorns shattered Saturday morning’s stillness, greeting cheering crowds lining the Golden Gate Bridge and the shores of San Francisco Bay to celebrate the return of Fleet Week.
San Francisco’s 21st celebration of the ships, sailors and aviators of the U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard resumed after a year’s hiatus following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Men and women in uniform, locals and tourists alike rolled out of bed early to catch the parade of warships, a hovercraft and rescue vessels.
