Roosevelt’s Adewale Bound for USC

From the time Jody Adewale was a second-grader at an elementary school across the street from USC, he has wanted to become a Trojan.

It finally happened earlier this week when USC football Coach Pete Carroll offered the Roosevelt High running back a scholarship. Adewale, who is 6-foot and 215 pounds, quickly accepted.

“My heart fell,” Adewale said. “I almost started crying. Since I’ve been little, I’ve wanted to go to that school.”

Another football player making his commitment was Harbor City Narbonne’s Antwan Applewhite, a 6-4, 220-pound defensive end who chose San Diego State.

Brea Olinda’s Evan Moore, a 6-7 tight end in football and forward in basketball, has committed to Stanford, where he will try both sports.

Allyson Felix of North Hills L.A. Baptist, the defending state track champion in the 100 and 200 meters, has taken recruiting trips to USC and South Carolina and plans to visit Stanford and Tennessee. Her brother, Wes, runs track at USC.

In baseball, Santa Ana Mater Dei pitcher Armando Carrasco has committed to Cal State Fullerton, and teammate Louie Hernandez, a third baseman, committed to UC Riverside.

Gabrielle Assayag, a senior at Irvine Northwood, has committed to UCLA for women’s rowing.

Amy Burlingham, a Parade All-American in girls’ soccer last season from Newport Harbor, has committed to Texas.

Crystal Erwin, a 6-2 power forward from Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, is visiting UCLA this weekend. She is deciding from among the Bruins, Notre Dame and Georgia.

In softball, infielder Norrelle Dickson of Orange El Modena has committed to Oklahoma, and teammates Jessica Hejna and Elizabeth Walters, both outfielders, have committed to UC Santa Barbara. Fullerton Rosary shortstop Lizzie Hagen, an All-Southern Section Division IV selection last season, has committed to Pacific. Dayna Feenstra, a first baseman at Artesia, has committed to Michigan State.

Wilmington Banning football Coach Ed Lalau said his standout safety, A.J. Tuitele, is still firmly committed to Oregon despite dropping by recently to watch a USC practice.
