Homecoming for This Pair

Share

There were two homecomings Tuesday: one for Mighty Duck goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere and another for Duck Coach Mike Babcock.

Giguere grew up in the Montreal suburbs, where he worshipped Patrick Roy. Giguere made his third career start in Montreal and stopped 22 of 24 shots in a 2-2 tie in front of 40 family members and friends. “I was really nervous tonight,” Giguere said. “It was 40 people against 20,000.”

Babcock played at McGill University. He returned one night after his team was whipped, 5-2, by Toronto. “That game was on national TV,” he said. “That’s just what you want your family to see.”

Duck enforcer Kevin Sawyer was locked in a fight with Montreal’s Stephane Quintal in the first period, when they just stopped. Quintal suffered a dislocated finger and asked for the break.

“It was the only thing to do,” Sawyer said. “That had never happened to me before. You’ll see someone’s face getting beat up, but you usually just keep pounding away. But this was something different.”
