Andy Roddick, James Blake, Todd Martin and Mardy Fish will represent the United States in its Davis Cup semifinal match against France, Sept. 20-22, the USTA announced Tuesday.

U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe contacted Pete Sampras, who played in the first two rounds this year, and Andre Agassi, who did not, and was turned down by both. McEnroe spoke with Sampras on Monday night.

“Obviously he’s exhausted and sky high in some ways after what he did in thrilling all of us at the U.S. Open, what both he and Andre did,” McEnroe said of the Open final Sunday, which Sampras won in four sets.

“I think Pete needs some time to digest what happened, think about what he wants to do, whether that means not play the rest of this year, whether that means maybe not even play again. I think he’s just worn out. I certainly understand that.”

Another difficult call was to Mike and Bob Bryan. The Bryans, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals in doubles, were strongly considered but fell out of the picture, in part, because of Roddick’s injured left foot.

“They’re great guys,” McEnroe said. “I think they would be great Davis Cup players.... But the reality is it’s hard to go with a doubles team in this match especially because I do have to consider Andy’s foot, which is better, but it’s certainly a concern of mine that Andy is a hundred percent healthy. The opportunity to have another singles player or two there I think was crucial.”

Additionally, the USTA extended McEnroe’s captaincy for two more years.
