The second World Cup of Hockey will be held in three North American cities and four European cities next year, Aug. 30 through Sept. 14 -- one day before the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and its players expires.

Organizers announced Thursday that games will be held in Montreal, Toronto and St. Paul, Minn., and Helsinki, Finland; Cologne, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic, and Stockholm. The championship game will be held Sept. 14, 2004, at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Each team will consist of 20 skaters plus three goalies, and teams will have a 10-day training camp. However, 18 skaters must be named by February. All games will be played on NHL-size rinks.

The U.S. defeated Canada to win the first World Cup of Hockey, in 1996. Those two nations, plus Russia and Slovakia, will be in one group, with Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland in the other group. Single-elimination quarterfinal and semifinal games will lead up to the single-game championship.
