It’s the Glavine of Old for Mets

Tom Glavine looked like the pitcher who dominated the New York Mets while he was with the Atlanta Braves, yielding one run in 5 2/3 innings and keying a three-run rally with a single to help New York beat the Montreal Expos, 3-1, Saturday at Shea Stadium.

Glavine (1-1) was the key to the Mets’ off-season overhaul, leaving Atlanta to sign a $35-million, three-year contract. But he was booed in Monday’s season-opening 15-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs when he walked four and gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Against the Expos, Glavine was back in control. He did not walk a batter and gave up only five hits as he tied Juan Marichal for 45th place on the all-time list with 243 wins.

Glavine left after giving up a run-scoring double to Vladimir Guerrero in the sixth inning. He tipped his cap after getting an ovation from the 36,817 fans who showed up on a 36-degree day.

Glavine was a key part of Atlanta’s 11 consecutive division titles, beating out the Mets the last eight years in the National League East. He was 17-7 against them, including a win in the 1999 NL championship series.

Cliff Floyd, another of the Mets’ big off-season pickups, had three hits and a run batted in to break out of a one-for-15 slump.

Met first baseman Mo Vaughn left after three innings because of a minor strain to his right hip flexor.
