Homeless Shelters to Be Open Another Month

From Times Staff Reports

Hours before nine shelters for the homeless were scheduled to close, the City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to keep them open another month.

The move, which will cost the city about $500,000, grants nearly 1,000 homeless people a temporary reprieve. The shelters usually operate only during the winter, but managers say they have been packed with more people than ever this year because of the feeble economy and a recent police crackdown on encampments in downtown’s skid row.
