The San Francisco Giants put left-hander Kirk Rueter on the 15-day disabled list Friday after tests determined that he has a strained pitching shoulder. The move is retroactive to July 26.

Rueter was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday in Chicago because of a stiff shoulder. He was sent back to San Francisco for tests.

Rueter is 7-3 with a 4.30 earned-run average in 20 starts. He has won 14 games each of the last two seasons for the Giants, matching Russ Ortiz for the staff lead last year.

The Giants called up left-hander Jeff Urban from triple-A Fresno to replace him. Urban was 3-7 with a 5.08 ERA in 17 starts and five relief appearances at Fresno.

Right-hander Roy Oswalt of the Houston Astros has an inflammation of his groin muscle, an injury that has put him on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season.

There is no structural damage and the next course of action has not been set, the club said. Oswalt (6-5) left Tuesday night’s 6-3 loss against Atlanta after throwing two pitches in the third inning.

Rookie Rodrigo Rosario, who took Oswalt’s roster spot in June, had surgery on his rotator cuff and biceps tendon and is out for the season.

Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. will have surgery Monday on his right shoulder, one of numerous injuries that ended his fourth season with the Cincinnati Reds.

Griffey dislocated his shoulder while trying to make a diving catch on April 5. He returned after 5 1/2 weeks even though the shoulder was still hurting him, hoping to get through the season and then have surgery to fix it.

Griffey’s season ended when he tore a tendon in his right ankle while running the bases on July 17. Doctors were waiting to see how he handled the ankle surgery before repairing the shoulder.
