Dessert Wins Del Mar Oaks
Dessert, the lesser-regarded half of the Thoroughbred Corp.-owned entry, went wire to wire in winning the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, a Grade I event run four races after the Pacific Classic on Sunday.
Making her first appearance in a graded stakes, Dessert -- trained by Richard Mandella and ridden by Corey Nakatani -- held off Solar Echo by a neck and won in an Oaks record 1:47.04 for the 1 1/8 miles on turf.
Atlantic Ocean, coupled in the wagering with Dessert and a runner-up in the Grade II San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 2, finished fifth.
