UCLA-bound shooting guard Arron Afflalo of Compton Centennial High has decided to transfer to Los Angeles Price after Centennial lost its academic accreditation.

Afflalo’s father, Benjamin, said Wednesday that he was in the process of applying to Price, a small private school that has won four consecutive state Division V boys’ basketball championships. Classes don’t begin until next week.

“It’s pretty tough [losing Afflalo], but we’ll deal with it,” said Centennial Coach Rod Palmer, who nearly left Centennial this summer for a coaching position at Long Beach Cabrillo.

Afflalo, who averaged 26.2 points last season, is expected to seek a hardship waiver from the Southern Section to gain eligibility at Price without moving.

Ryen Carew, a senior running back at Sylmar High who rushed for 2,095 yards and 21 touchdowns, was kicked off the football team by Coach Jeff Engilman after an argument with the player and his father, Allen, over the use of Carew at other positions in practice.

“We didn’t think our team played like a team much last year and I was bound and determined to change that,” Engilman said. “I want players playing for Sylmar and not for themselves.”

Carew, who is being recruited by some Pacific 10 Conference schools, is considering a transfer. He lives in the San Fernando area.

Swift played for Bakersfield Garces last season, then transferred to Bakersfield Highland. Bakersfield won the Central Section Division I championship last season.
