Killing Should Spark Outrage and Action

Re “Errant Bullet Shatters L.A. Family,” Dec. 17: What will be the final straw? When will we collectively say we have had enough of the violent crime that has killed so many people in Los Angeles? Laudeina Salazar was the most innocent of victims, at home with her children, decorating the family’s Christmas tree, when a stray bullet struck her. A mother shot inside her own home in front of her two children; is that enough to prod us to action?

A problem with far-reaching and tenacious societal roots will not be easy to solve, but we must start somewhere. We should be saddened and angered into action. The voice of outrage often starts softly. Each of us, with even a muted whisper of anger, can together build to a loud and powerful force. Talk with your friends and neighbors. If you have never called or written your City Council representative, today is the time when you need to express your concern.

Call the commander of your local police division. Speak with leaders at your place of worship. The Salazar family and countless others who have been shattered by the senseless violent acts of thugs and street hoodlums are counting on you to help.
