Officer Wounds Man in Post-Accident Scuffle

A Monrovia police officer shot and wounded a man Thursday during an early-morning scuffle that broke out after a traffic accident on the Foothill Freeway, authorities said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was taken to a hospital and was listed in serious condition after surgery late Thursday.

The incident began about 2 a.m. when Monrovia police were called to help the California Highway Patrol find the driver of a vehicle that had been involved in a crash on the eastbound lane of the Foothill Freeway near Myrtle Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Monrovia officer involved in the shooting saw the man at a pay phone near Myrtle and Pomona avenues and began to question him, the Sheriff’s Department said. The man allegedly attacked the officer and then reached into his bag.

The officer fired one shot, striking the man in the torso, the Sheriff’s Department said. The name of the officer was not released.
