THE TIMES’ RANKINGS

Share

There are no changes in the rankings as the top 10 teams compiled a 16-0-3 record last week while outscoring opponents, 55-13. The three ties occurred Friday, when No. 1 Santa Margarita and No. 6 Santa Ana Mater Dei played to a 1-1 draw in a Serra League game, and No. 8 Lake Forest El Toro and Dana Point Dana Hills battled to a 0-0 final in the South Coast League. Santa Margarita and Santa Barbara, ranked third and 17th in the nation by Student Sports magazine last week, will play their final two games of the regular season this week and then prepare for the first round of the Southern Section playoffs on Feb. 22. The other ranked teams play at least one game this week and one next week.

Top-ranked Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley is on a three-game winning streak, which sounds modest but is an accomplishment in the South Coast League. North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake swaps places with Santa Margarita, which last week had a second-half defensive meltdown against Santa Ana Mater Dei and settled for a 3-3 tie after leading, 3-0. San Clemente and Canyon Country Canyon trade places after San Clemente suffered a 3-0 South Coast loss against No. 7 Mission Viejo. Fourth-ranked Dana Point Dana Hills and No. 5 Lake Forest El Toro tied, 1-1, last week, but El Toro had to forfeit the game as well as another to San Clemente. Forfeit victories and losses are reflected for ranked teams.

*--* GIRLS’ WATER POLO

*--*

Nobody can accuse the top girls’ water polo teams of dodging one another. For the third time this season, most will be entered in the same tournament when the 32-team Irvine Southern California Invitational begins Friday at Saddleback College, Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Lake Forest El Toro highs. The favorite again will be Santa Ana Foothill, which is closing in on its first undefeated season. The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Corona del Mar. Last week, Upland defeated Etiwanda, 8-2, to take control of the Baseline League race. Etiwanda trailed by only two goals until Upland’s Tami Bersbach scored on a counterattack late in the third quarter. In the only matchup of top-10 teams, Santa Margarita edged Long Beach Wilson, 11-10, last Tuesday.

*--* WRESTLING

*--*

Poway, the top-ranked team in the state, dominated the Canyon Springs tournament, winning by 159.5 points over runner-up Temecula Valley, which was coming off its victory at the Riverside County Championships. Temecula Valley still had an impressive showing. The Golden Bears had six wrestlers place among the top six, with Morgan Atkinson taking second at 130 pounds and Cory Beeson placing second at 140. Temecula Valley also had three wrestlers place third, including 112-pounder Steve Saric, who seems vastly improved since he was pinned in the first round of the Five Counties Invitational last month. Saric defeated three wrestlers at Canyon Springs who finished ahead of him at Five Counties.
